Is the rise of Barack Obama to the presidency in the United States of America ironic?

Over the years, the civil rights movement in the United States of America had a dream of an equal society in which each person had an equal chance of success. However, the civil rights leaders never thought that a Black American could rise to the helm of the country's power. Ironically, the whites and the non-whites rallied behind Obama and believed in his ideologies when campaigning for the presidency. Obama won, and he proved that being black does not imply inability. It is on record that President Obama is one of the smartest individuals that have occupied the white house.

What does the author mean when he says, "Fury spends itself pretty quickly when there's no fury facing it?"

Lewis says these words when leading a non-violent civil movement against racism and other forms of prejudice directed towards the blacks in America. According to Lewis, a non-violent protest is more potent because it is irresistible. Hatred towards blacks has existed since the advent of slavery. However, the racists in current America are fewer than 50 years ago, which signifies the hope that America will be a racist-free society one day. Lewis believes that the few remaining racists will abandon their hatred and treat other people with humanity through peaceful protests.

Lewis narrates how the Black Americans have been disfranchised for many years, and he thinks that the best way to end this is by encouraging an open-minded society that embraces people of all colors. Lewis tells horror stories of how the blacks have been mistreated in the past to encourage the current and future generations to be open-minded and appreciate each other. According to Lewis, history is essential in reminding people where they have come from, which helps shape their future.
