The irony of Africa
Mathew is raised in the African land while growing up. When he gets older, he relocates to England to pursue his studies. Ironically, after returning to Africa, Mathew thinks that Africa has changed, yet everything remains the same. Ironically, Mathew thinks that Africa does not fit him anymore, despite growing up in the same place.
The paradox of the Dark Continent
Africa is associated with bad things because many people in the West think it is uncivilized. In the story 'The Perfume Sea,' Doree and Archipelago run a beauty shop, but they are still poor despite frequent tourists. The paradox is that Africa is regarded as a Dark Continent, but it is flocked to by European tourists.
The irony of evangelization
According to the Biblical teachings, all human beings are equal before God. Preachers are expected to uphold high levels of dignity when saving souls. However, Brother Lemon is doing exactly the opposite. For instance, he believes that he will save many souls within six months when he comes to Africa. Ironically, Brother Lemon has racist views, and he looks at Black people as lesser beings.
