The Irony of John’s smile - “Idiots”
Gottlieb asserts, “I’ m curious about your (John's) smile just now…Because you are talking about being frustrated by many people, including Margo, and yet you’re smiling.” John’s smirk is ironic; typically he would be depressed for he is conversing about the individuals who infuriate him. His ironic beaming is an indicator of his underlying mental complications which provoke his frustration with everyone.
The Irony of “The Smart One” - “The Smart One or the Hot One”
Gottlieb writes, “ Still, I wasn’t sure why Brad had pegged me as smart. All I’d done that day was dial a string off phone numbers (repeatedly disconnecting calls by pressing the wrong buttons on the confusing phone system), make coffee (which was sent back twice), Xerox a script (I pushed 10 instead of 1 for number of copies, then hid the nine extra screenplays under a couch in the break room), and trip over a lamp cord in Brad’s office and fall on my ass.” Brad’s supposition about Gootlieb’s intelligence is sarcastic considering the faults she commits on her ‘test run.’ Had she been unquestionably brainy she would have accomplished her test without blunders. Accordingly, other dazzling finalist is not as sharp as Gottlieb.
