Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Imagery

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Imagery

The elongated essay

The image of the whole book being Greg’s elongated college essay is very strong. The book was able to reflect and see both the positive and the negative sides of Greg’s behavior. In the ending, he also reveals that he chose to apply to film school, which was what he really wanted to do. Thus, through the elongated college essay, we see the full character development Greg has, fulfilled.

Rachel's death and the aftermath

When Rachel passes away, an image of despair, misery and sorrow is evident. Both Earl and Greg have breakdowns, and in the process, all the films they have ever made are destroyed. Everything Greg and Earl had worked so hard for, and even the film about Rachel herself all died with her. The scene showed how much Rachel meant to the boys, even though they tried their best to not get close to anyone.

Rachel The Film

The image of Greg and Earl working on a movie called “Rachel The Film” is a turning point in the story. Greg didn’t work hard or care enough about anything to do so. He even held himself at an arm-length from his peer, to make sure no one got to close to him. But now, he was letting himself be vulnerable and making something for someone else than himself, for the first time in a long time. It was the first scene where it is a clear breakthrough in Greg’s life and character.
