Memoirs of a Woman Doctor Summary

Memoirs of a Woman Doctor Summary

After graduating from high school, a young Egyptian woman decides to study medicine and become a doctor instead of fulfilling her mother’s (and society’s) wish of marrying and serving a husband. Having been raised within extensive restrictions, she now enjoys the new freedom that science offers. For example, during a dissecting class, when she sees the naked bodies of a man and a woman side by side, she realizes that the way society treats men and women is completely arbitrary. Moreover, she realizes that there is no difference between humans and animals.

However, after spending some time working in a hospital and discovering how fragile humans are, she leaves the city and moves into a small cottage. She seems to enjoy her solitude until a sick man knocks on her door. While treating him, she rediscovers her love of life and decides to go back to the city to find love. One of her first patients there is an old woman. When she tells her son that his mother is dying of old age and nothing can be done, the man’s heart breaks. Soon after, the man visits the doctor in her office, and soon after, the two get married. However, it turns out that the man is not as sweet and caring as he pretended to be. Instead, he is merely looking for someone to replace his lost mother, so the doctor soon divorces him and starts looking for a new love.

She meets an intriguing surgeon but rejects him due to his dominant character before the relationship becomes too serious. Defying her family's and society's expectations of a proper Muslim woman, she focuses her efforts entirely on her clinic. With ever greater numbers of patients pouring in, the female doctor reaches the status of a celebrity.

At the same time, her feeling of loneliness increases as well. Eventually, she meets a musician at a party. Their deep conversation opens her eyes, and she understands what the purpose of her life as a doctor is.
