After Matty sacrificed his life, Leader awards him his true name, which is not Messenger, as Matty has always hoped. This quote emphasizes that one's true gift and best quality is revealed when facing great challenges--and it may be different from the image that people have of themselves.
"That's why they call you Seer. You see more than most."
Matty says this seemingly paradoxical statement about his blind guardian. However, because the old man is blind, he is not deceived by someone's outer appearance. Instead, he focuses on small clues to judge a person's character, which most people do not do and are therefore misled.
"You'd be surprised. Everyone has something to trade."
At the Trade Mart, Matty says he does not have anything to trade. However, Mentor assures him that there are things that others want from him. Little does Matty know that Mentor is talking about personality, gifts, and one's very soul.

Matty realizes that healing Kira's leg would ultimately change her identity and personality. He learns that being imperfect is acceptable.
