First performed in 1604, Michaelmas Term is a play by the English playwright Thomas Middleton. The play is set in St. Paul's Cathedral, and revolves around a personified "Michaelmas Term". Divided into five acts, the play received good reception upon release, and simply added the the list of works that Thomas Middleton has done, including Women Beware Women and A Game at Chess. The play is often noted as hard to follow because of the long list of characters, but its storyline is quite unique and brilliant when understood.
Thomas Middleton was a 17th century playwright, born in 1580. Living only 47 years, Middleton accomplished quite a lot in his life. Son of a bricklayer, Middleton likely gained his interest in writing plays because his father owned land abut a theatre. One of his best known works is considered among the best of the Renaissance, titled, The Changeling. T.S. Eliot even claimed that Middleton was "...only second to Shakespeare". All though not every entertainment critic feels that Middleton lived up to Shakespeare's reputation, he was certainly an innovator in the field of both comedic and dramatic plays.
