In groups, students will research and report on sea shanties from the 19th-century.

Structure:

This activity consists of two larger components: in the first (described here), students will research and prepare a presentation on sea shanties from the 1800s - later, in Part 2, students will write and perform a shanty of their own.

Begin by dividing students into groups of four or five. Allow groups sufficient time to research sea shanties. A number of resources of available, and a few useful ones are listed below.
