Moonlight Irony

Moonlight Irony

Bel’s betrayal

Bel is still married to Andy, but their relationship is unstable and unpromising. Andy is on his death bed, reflecting on his marriage and life. Despite undergoing many challenges, including disagreements and fights, Andy cannot believe that Bel had a sexual affair with another man. Consequently, Bel did the contrary when she decided to cheat on her husband.

The paradox of marriage

Marriage is an institution depicted as holy and respectable. However, the marriage between Bel and Andy is portrayed as frustrating, unhappy, and disheartening. The couples are in constant fights. Andy is about to die, and he has nothing to celebrate in his marriage. Readers learn that marriage is not ecstasy, and they should not have unrealistic expectations.

Parenting

The satire of parenting is one of the main issues the author focuses on in ‘Moonlight.’ Andy and Bel are blessed with two children. However, the distance between the father and the children is big because their relationship is strained. The boys expect their father to be their role model, but the opposite is the reality in this case.
