Artur Sammler
An elderly Polish Jew and survivor of the Holocaust. He is physically disabled, having lost one eye in the Nazi regime, and is highly educated. He enjoys observing people and encounters many unique and strange individuals during his life.
The black pickpocket
A powerful thief who carries out his criminal activities on the Broadway bus. He becomes a source of fascination for Sammler but eventually becomes a threatening figure when he confronts Sammler and issues a warning.
Angela Gruner
A provocative and sexually free young woman who elicits feelings of disgust in Sammler yet at the same time he is her confidant in her secrets and escapades.
Shula Sammler
The daughter of Sammler. Having been affected by her mother's brutal death and her despair-filled life and the suffering endured, she is quite an eccentric character. She is obsessed with the idea of completing a memoir of H.G Wells.
