Irony of “Healthy Meat”
The meat is marketed as healthy and wholesome; instead, the meat achieves the opposite, being virtually toxic as it is so full of antibiotic residue. One of the directors of the show becomes horribly ill after consuming the meat suffering from an allergic reaction to the chemicals.
Irony of “Consuming Beef is Masculine”
The other angle that the show uses to market the beef is that beef consumption is a masculine, manly activity as beef comes from strong, healthy beasts. The truth, however, is the reverse, as the meat is so tainted with synthetic hormones that it effectively decreases the sex drive and sperm count of men that eat it.
Irony of “My American Wife!”
The show itself is a farce promoting the sales and use of practically poisonous meat, and promoting a set of values and practices that are both dated and alien to the primarily Japanese audience.
Irony of Femininity and Value of Women limited only to Motherhood
In the novel, the lead characters are shackled by their inability to bear children but only because their respective partners cannot seem to get past their hang ups about being parents. Jane and Akiko’s husbands view femininity only in the light of motherhood, and as such when these women fail to conceive these characters cease to value them.
Irony of Male Characters
Male characters in the novel are all presented either in a negative light or as distant, ineffectual creatures, effectively turning them into antagonists.
