Mysterious Kor Characters

Mysterious Kor Character List

Pepita

Pepita is a headstrong young woman, who fantasizes about a fictitious place called Kor to escape the reality of war without realizing that she hurts her boyfriend Arthur by neglecting him. When Arthur tries to explain his point of view, she shows her authoritative side and does not accept Arthur's arguments. Callie describes Pepita as a secretive self-centered cat, which means she takes things for granted and her selfish thinking cannot be influenced. Indeed, Pepita is rather inconsiderate and ungrateful, as she enters Callie's bedroom without knocking and then wonders why Callie is still standing—without realizing that Callie wants to make some space for her in the cramped flat. Pepita's character is underlined by her name, which is the Spanish feminine form of Joseph, meaning "God shall add." This is significant because she identifies with the Goddess who is said to rule Kor.

Arthur

Arthur is a soldier on leave for the night. He wants to spend his time with his girlfriend Pepita, who is lost in her own fantasies, however. He is visibly distressed by her neglect but does not openly tell her this. Instead, he lets go of her hand and in his mind questions their relationship. He contemplates that even though she is not his type, they still ended up together somehow, indicating that he is not completely satisfied with the relationship. In contrast to Pepita, he is very polite, grateful and considerate when he arrives at Callie's place and enjoys her hospitality. At night, however, when he talks to Callie in private he reveals that he has now also adopted Pepita's way of escaping reality by imagining a safe place like Kor.

Callie

Callie is Pepita's roommate. She earns more than Pepita and therefore pays most of the rent. Pepita would have wanted her to leave the flat for the night, so that she can spend her time with Arthur alone, but Callie did not realize the underlying reason because she is rather naive and simple minded. Callie is described as a tall, shy, brotherless virgin with the demeanor of a votive candle, which means she appears religious and slightly aristocratic. Indeed, in war-torn London she tries to maintain an orderly environment in her tiny make-shift flat. Having no boyfriend of her own, she participates in Pepita's relationship with Arthur on a spiritual level, which shows, however, that she longs for a man, as she has been anticipating his arrival for some time. When Arthur and Pepita arrive at her flat, she is particularly considerate and cares for both, revealing her submissive traits and the good manners of "an old-fashioned country doctor's daughter." During her private conversation with Arthur she clings to the idea of pursuing rationalistic goals, while Arthur has turned toward the unreal.
