Naked Lunch Imagery

The imagery of the kids face

After the narrator thanks a 'kid' who offers him a smoke and calls him one of their own, the kid feels happy. The narrator uses a simile in which he expresses the imagery of the boy as his face lights up. Through this imagery, the reader is able to then understand the boy's happiness as he finally develops a sense of belonging. The narrator says: "His face lights up like a pinball machine, with stupid, pink effect."

Willy's imagery

The narrator vividly describes Willy as he stands in the elongated courtroom with his face torn. The narrator at this point uses a simile in which his torn face is compared to a broken film, this description and direct comparison facilitates the imagery further: "He stood there in elongated courtroom shadow, his face torn like a broken film by lusts and hungers of larval organs stirring in the tentative ectoplasmic flesh of junk kick (ten days on ice at time of the First Hearing) flesh that fades at the first silent touch of junk."

The imagery of the narrator's explanation of how to use the Rube

As the narrator explains how the Rube is used, the imagery of the procedure becomes increasingly prevalent. First, the action of pinching and making a quick stab hole with a pin is explicit imagery: "the real scene you pinch up some leg flesh and make a quick stab hole with a pin." Additionally, the fitting of the dropper and careful feeding of the solution, so it does not squirt, is vivid. The use of the simile in expression of how the lube's thigh flesh came up like wax further enhances the imagery: " Then fit the dropper over, not in the hole and feed the solution slow and careful so it doesn't squirt out the sides... When I grabbed the Rube's thigh the flesh came up like wax and stayed there, and a slow drop of pus oozed out the hole."

Benway's flickering face

The narrator uses a simile in expression of how Benway's face retained its flash bulb of urgency. His face is said to flicker and is directly compared to the flickering of a picture moving in and out of focus. This enhances the imagery of Benway's face: "Benway's face retains its form in the flash bulb of urgency, subject at any moment to unspeakable cleavage or metamorphosis. It flickers like a picture moving in and out of focus."
