Douglass decides to walk seven miles from Covey's place to his master's. Why might Douglass have felt that his master would be more sympathetic than covey?

Master Thomas was definitely more sympathetic toward his slave, and Douglass believed he would afford him protection. Left to die, he believed Master Thomas would help him. Unfortunately, Thomas returned Douglass to Covey for the duration of his promised year.
