Douglass' life was completely different in Baltimore. He was reunited with some of his family, he had enough food to eat, clean clothing, and far more freedom. He described the Auld's as kind and gentle, at least until Mrs. Auld was reprimanded for teaching Douglass his alphabet. Over time, she became a cruel mistress. None-the-less, Douglass describes Baltimore as a far better place to be than the plantation.
