Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

Explain the evidence Douglass offers to support the idea that Captain Auld "found religious sanction and support for his slaveholding cruelty."

I need your help with this stupid E.L.A. question.

What Douglass loathed most about Auld was his conspicuous hypocrisy regarding religion; he claimed to be pious and devoted to Christianity but was demonstrably brutal and duplicitous. He eventually sent Douglass to live with Edward Covey, the famed slave-breaker.
