how did Mr.covey treat Douglass and his peers? what enabled Douglass top survive the incidents of the oxen and the beatings?

Under Mr. Convey Douglas is relegated to the back breaking work of field hand. Convey is a fist class tyrant. He makes Darth Vader look like Yoda. Convey regularly beats the daylights out of Douglass. On one occasion Douglas turns a cart over and injures the animals. Douglas is whipped regularly. One day he stares out at the sails in the sea and launches into a speech about freedom. This keeps Douglass going. He will endure all for the chance to one day be free.
