How did mr.sever cause the slaves to live in terror

This guy's name pretty much sums him up. He was a cruel overseer of slaves. He used to stand by the slaves with a large hickory stick and savagely beat slaves for most any reason. He derived joy from whipping women in front of their pleading children.
