Douglass uses his life as proof of his assertions. For example, when he says that the slave owner suffers as much as the slave, he notes how Mrs. Auld was forced to change when her husband ordered her to no longer teach Douglass. She actually became harder and more hardened in her attitude even though she had been so kind before.
