One of the most important passages in the book is the story of his education in the home of his master, Mr. Auld. Through his education, Douglass has the foundation for the rest of his life; he can go on with his learning even after Mrs. Auld has been forbidden to teach him anything else. After he can no longer learn from her, he can begin to learn on his own; he can argue whenever given the opportunity with his white friends (young men his own age), and he will then gain some of the rhetorical skills he will need for his future. To be an abolitionist he has to have both the vocabulary, the passion, and the organization to become a leader of those who want freedom for the slaves.
