What methods did Douglass take to learn to read and write?

Douglass lives at Master Hugh's for about seven years. During his early day's at Master Hugh's, Hugh's wife treated him well and instructed him how to read and write. After being forbidden to help him, mistress Hugh's stopped teaching him. Douglass used his basic knowledge to teach himself.
