Douglass counted many whites among his friends, thus, in your question, I presume you are referring to slaveholders?

Douglass believed slaveholders were manipulative, cruel, and hypocritical. They kept their slaves ignorant in order to to keep them manageable, happy, placid, and content. He believed that Christianity, as used by slaveowners, was a perversion of God's will, that piety was used to conceal their corruption and evil.
