Chicago and the Great Migration

A digital collection of documents relating to the 'Great Migration', the period between 1915 and 1970 when approximately 6 million African Americans left the South to states in the north and west of the United States. Wright himself was part of this migration, and it deeply informs the setting and characters of Native Son. Particularly relevant is a 1934 census map of Chicago, showing the Black Belt described in the novel.
