Jonathan cuts his thumb with a bread knife and Dracula wants his blood. The Count tells him that sucking it is the oldest remedy to cure infection, and we watch as Dracula attempts to keep his cool. But when he slams a chair away we see this as a symbol of his craving for blood, that it overtakes him and he loses control.
Coffins
In a wide shot we watch as groups of men carry multiple wooden coffins through the town square. This is a symbol of the Black Plague that is upon the town. A symbol of the death that Count Dracula has inflicted upon the people.
Dinner and Rats
We watch as the people are gathered around a dinner table eating while rats surround them. This is a symbol that death is all around them even in the midst of any celebration they may attempt to have.
Cloud Movement
Jonathan makes his long journey to the castle and we see the clouds begin to move in strange ways. This is a symbol that where he is going has upon it a dark power that cannot be explained by reason.
Light in the Darkness
The sun has set during Jonathan's journey to the castle and we see a single bit of light from around a rock. Out of it comes Jonathan on his carriage. This is a symbol that any light that remains must come from within Jonathan as it is all blotted out by Dracula.
