Colonna
Colonna is the protagonist and narrator of the novel. He is fifty years old, but has not achieved much success in life. He earns a living by translating texts from German.
Simei
Simei is a former professor at the university. This character knew Colonna before, and knows that he is a talented writer, though a loser in life.
Maia
Maia is a talented journalist, but she could not have become successful; it seems that events are turned against her. Although she has a deep view into the people’s characters, she is not taken seriously by others. Only Colonna managed to see how really interesting and talented she is.
Braggadocio
Braggadocio is one of the journalists hired for the work at the newspaper “Tomorrow”. Simultaneously he works both on the tasks given by Simei and on his personal investigation concerning Benito Mussolini. Braggadocio is sure that the former leader of Italian fascism was not killed in 1945 but successfully left Italy. One morning, Colonna learns that Braggadocio was killed.
