Analyze John's metaphor with the plane. How well does this represent Carol's current issue? Does Carol seem receptive to it? If so, why? If not, why not?
John's sharing of the metaphor is one of the few times in the play that John and Carol begin to see eye to eye. The metaphor does seem to help Carol begin to break out of her negative self-talk, but this breakthrough is undermined almost immediately by John suggesting that he must get "personal" with Carol in order to help her understand things. The metaphor is ultimately quite accurate.
