On Her Majesty's Secret Service Quotes

Quotes

It was one of those Septembers when it seemed that the summer would never end.

Narrator

This opening line is fraught with irony. For one thing, it seems more like the opening line of a romance novel than a Bond story. For another, it turns out that it is a romance novel, in a way. The greatest irony, however, may be that so much of the action sequences are utterly dependent upon the notable effects of winter weather.

“Six months ago, the baby died.”

Draco

Tracy’s suicidal, impulsive, and wild lifestyle is explained to Bond by her father. Recently, her only child died of spinal meningitis.

“And this charming motto of the line, `The World is not Enough.’”

Griffon Or

Bond learns that the motto of his ancestral family line translates into “The world is not enough.” And now you know why one of the later movies not based on an actual Ian Fleming novel bears those words as it title.

“None of the de Bleuvilles, as far I could tell, and certainly not through a hundred and fifty years, had lobes to their ears.”

Sable Basilisk

The world of spies is weird, man! From this offbeat bit of information about a curious genetic mutation and the fact that de Bleuville is the type of name that could be easily mutated into a more Anglicized spelling, Bond is off and running to check up on the physical appearance of a nemesis.

“And I do not want to marry, not anyone.”

James Bond

This assertion by Bond comes immediately after being offered one million pounds by Draco to marry his daughter, Tracy. Bond insists she needs a psychiatrist, not a husband, and that what Draco is nothing less than impossible.

“Tracy, I love you. Will you marry me?”

James Bond

Admittedly, some time has elapsed between the offer from Draco and this genuine, authentic and entirely non-larcenous proposal. That time has been packed with incident and over the course of it, 007 has fallen deeply in love. His desire for marriage is surprising even to himself, but utterly sincere.

“Let him go. We’ve got all the time in the world.”

James Bond

Mr. and Mrs. James Bond are in Tracy’s sleek little sports car speeding down the road on the way to their honeymoon when Tracy—in the driver’s seat—notices a red car coming up behind them. She turns and asks if he wants her to lose them. His ironic reply is the last words she’ll ever hear.
