Bri
Bri is a well-meaning girl whose family lives in a rough part of town. Without access to public resources, her family often takes dubious paths. She has addicts and drug dealers in her family, and together, they struggle to make ends meet. Bri is constantly paranoid about her mother relapsing, and although Aunty Pooh is helping the family, she is doing it in illegal ways. Bri fights with her brother often about the dysfunction in the home.
Aunty Pooh
Aunty Pooh is a vivacious character. She is encouraging and emboldening to Bri, but Aunty Pooh has a dark side. She is also a drug dealer in the neighborhood, and Bri's life is always connected to the underworld by this fact. Aunty Pooh's decision to sell drugs leaves the whole house paranoid about police, drug feuds, and the ever-present danger of drug usage and addiction in the home.
Jay
Jay is Bri's mother, who loves her and tries to support her, but who often fails, because her life is secretly riddled with serious drug addiction. Although Jay has been clean from crack cocaine for almost a decade, Bri feels she is responsible to watch over Jay, hoping she will not relapse. Instead of her mother supporting her, Bri supports her mother because of the difficult nature of addiction.
Trey
Whereas Bri wants to believe the best about people, Trey is primarily angry. He resents his mother's selfish behavior, and without understanding the true grips of addiction, he often judges her, leaving Bri to defend a (sometimes indefensible) mother. Trey knows there is an unhealthy power inversion in the home, because Bri is clearly the responsible one, so he often takes her to task, fighting bitterly with her, sometimes blaming her for the family's problems.
