Why do you think Woolf brought Nick Greene back into the novel? What does he represent?
In addition to being a comic figure, Nick Greene functions as a sort of foil for Orlando's literary career. He is the one major character who lives as long as Orlando and shares her passion for writing, but he conducts himself in the exact opposite way. He represents the academic idea of literature--he is now a critic and professor, and he lauds the Elizabethan era as the great age of literature (which, at the time, he had denied). Greene represents what Orlando does not want from her literary life.
