Every day and every year, science and knowledge are progressing. As scientists work to craft new technology, society relies more and more on these products. In Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood projects her thoughts on the potential of science running amok. After years of simplifying daily life through technology, lives have grown reversely more complicated; Atwood predicts that if not regulated, science can and will destroy the world. In Oryx and Crake, Crake desires to control the nature of Nature through science. His creations lead to the destruction of animal intelligence and mankind as a whole, proving that society is not only trusting, but fully reliant on technology.
Crake’s first creation is the BlyssPluss pill. Crake seeks to destroy mankind, and by understanding society’s gullibility as consumers, he achieves its downfall. More than anything, society craves happiness. Crake’s creation of the BlyssPluss Pill gives it that—protection against sexually transmitted diseases, an unlimited supply of libido, energy, a reduction in violent urges, an elimination of low self-esteem, and prolonged youth. Additionally, the BlyssPluss Pill operates as a birth control pill only needed to be taken once, which would cure overpopulation....
