Our Share of Night Irony

The ancestral family

Family is a source of unity and comfort. Whenever an individual faces challenges in life, the first people to turn to are family members. When Gaspar and his father decide to visit his mother’s ancestral home, they expect a warm welcome and comfort. Ironically, instead of the family welcoming Gaspar and his father affectionately, it plots to capture Gaspar and use him for satanic rituals. When the father discovers the family’s intentions, he runs away with his son to ensure his safety.

The paradox of immortality

Gaspar's relatives believe that they are immortal. To maintain this weird belief, the relatives must sacrifice a close family member annually. Ironically, Gaspar's mother is a member of this family, but she died despite the family strictly following the ritual requirements. Therefore, Gaspar's relatives are in denial and want to accept the reality that they are mortal.

Verbal irony

Gaspar's father knows that they will mourn the death of his wife for many years to come. However, he tells Gaspar they will stop grieving in a few days. This context has verbal irony because Gaspar's father does not mean what he says. The father intentionally comforts his son to accept that his mother is never coming back.
