    Larsen “sets the stage” by piquing the reader’s interest about Clare Kendry by dropping hints and bits of information about her, as well as withholding the full story. That is to say, Larsen writes a bit about Irene’s memories of Clare and Clare’s relationship with her father, but does not explain much more. She also teases the reader with “that time in Chicago” without explaining what exactly happened. Thus, the reader is compelled to read on and investigate this mystery.
