Paul's Case Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

"Paul's Case" is a striking divergence Cather's well-known works, novels such as O Pioneers!, A Lost Lady, and My Ántonia. Cather's oeuvre explores the significance of white people's lives on the American frontier and the visceral elements of that experience. However, "Paul's Case" does resemble one of Cather's best stories, "A Wagner Matinee," which also deals with the power of art. Works from other authors with a similar approach to art and individuality include The Other Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the poem "The Bridge" by Hart Crane, and the stories in Three Lives by Gertrude Stein.
