Penpal Irony

Penpal Irony

The irony of the balloons

At the beginning of the story, the protagonist, a young boy alongside his schoolmates, attached notes to the balloon and blew them so that the finders of the balloons could become their pen pals. The protagonist was eager that he could be among the first people to get a pen pal. Ironically, all classmates except the protagonist got replies of friendship!

The irony of the photographs

The protagonist was eager to get a pen pal, and with time, he started receiving photographs from a boy. The pictures indicated various activities the boy was doing with his mother. The protagonist was not aware that the photographs received by him were symbolizing a bad omen. Later, strange things started to happen in the neighborhood. For instance, an older woman was murdered. Similarly, the protagonist woke up in an unknown location without knowing how he got there. Consequently, the photographs received by the protagonist were satirical because they brought sorrow instead of friendship.

The irony of the disappearance of the cat

After the protagonist's family started witnessing misfortunes in their old house, his mother decided to relocate to a new home. Relocating to the new home was meant to give them peace of mind. While in the new home, it is satirical that the protagonist's cat disappeared and moved to their old home. When the protagonist went to look for the cat, he traced it to the old house, where he started having bad memories.

The irony of Josh’s father

Josh's father was a landscaper, and he was wondering why his son was missing for over two years. When he was hired to do landscaping in one of the properties, his primary focus was finishing his task according to schedule. While doing his work, he came across a coffin underneath, and upon opening it, he noticed the body of his son and another man. Consequently, Josh's dad did not expect to find his son in such circumstances, even if he had been missing for over two years.

The Irony of Veronica’s Death

The protagonist started dating Veronica after the disappearance of her broth, Josh. Unfortunately, Veronica was hit by a car, and the culprit fled away. Veronica was taken to the hospital and regularly communicated with the protagonist via text. When Veronica was almost recovering, she promised the protagonist that they would meet in a movie theater to have fun. Ironically, the protagonist's hope of seeing Veronica at the theater vanished when he learned of her sudden death. The last thing that the protagonist hoped for is Veronica's early demise. Consequently, the reader realizes that Veronica's family is full of misfortunes because her dad later discovered the decomposing body of her brother, Josh.
