Pierre: or, The Ambiguities Imagery

The summer mornings

The summer mornings characterize the city’s weather condition and this depicts the sense of sight to readers. For instance, the country experiences strange summer mornings and this gives readers a glimpse of the weather of the country in which the book is set. Therefore, the reader knows that the mornings are warm and clear. The author writes, “There are some strange summer mornings in the country, when he who is but a sojourner from the city shall early walk forth into the fields, and be wonder-smitten with the trance-like aspect of the green and golden world.”

The hills

What comes to readers’ minds when the author talks about the sanctification of the hills is nothing but the country’s splendor. The sanctification of the hills depicts the sense of sight to readers. The author writes, “It has been said that the beautiful country round about Pierre appealed to very proud memories. But not only through the mere chances of things, had that fine country become ennobled by the deeds of his sires, but in Pierre's eyes, all its hills and swales seemed as sanctified through their very long uninterrupted possession by his race.” The imagery further shows the country’s steadiness, graciousness and serenity. Consequently, this imagery also acts as a symbol of tranquility and synchronization in Pierre’s mind.

Lucy Tartan

The author uses imagery to describe Lucy Tartan’s beauty. Lucy’s beauty has not been witnessed in this world before because her complexion and composition are unique. According to the author, Lucy’s cheeks are predominantly white and delicate. Similarly, Lucy’s eyes are gorgeous and splendor. The author writes, “But though owing to the above-named provisions of dame Nature, there always will be beautiful women in the world; yet the world will never see another Lucy Tartan. Her cheeks were tinted with the most delicate white and red, the white predominating. Her eyes some god brought down from heaven; her hair was Danae's, spangled with Jove's shower; her teeth were dived for in the Persian Sea.”
