Faceless people
The people Tony often passes by are described on numerous occasions in the play. Almost every time they lack any form of individuality and are portrayed as being bodies that do not possess an actual face to set them apart. This image is important because it further transmits the idea of a lack of individuality and uniqueness.
The crows
The crows are mentioned time and time again in the play and are the only animals or birds present. They are often portrayed as sitting up in the sky and looking emotionless at the people walking the streets. The image of the crows is important here because they are used to portray death and decay.
Black trees
The universe in which the action of the play takes place is devoid of any type of plant or living organisms. However, the streets are described as being lined with trees devoid of any type of leaves or color. The black trees present here are an important element because they portray stagnation and the inability to grow.
Grimy bar top
The bar in which Tony and Nick meet in the play is described here as being in a deplorable state. The author paints the bar top for example as being grimy and so filthy it appears to be completely black. This image is extremely important because it is used to portray the internal state of the characters and their moral status.
