"Smelled the rat"

(phrase) noticing or detecting treachery, used in reference to an affair

Dogged

(adjective) followed or pursued by someone, often to be investigated

"First-rate man"

(term) implied to be a detective or someone hired to investigate an affair

Assiduous

(adjective) constant or unrelenting, refusing to give up

Platonic

(adjective) relating to Plato's theory of the forms, being purely abstract or spiritual in form

"Smell her off you"

(phrase) detect the affair between two people, implied through perfume or scent

Stricken

(adjective) frozen, unable to move due to an emotional effect

"Put a bloodhound on me"

(phrase) hired a detective or investigator to research the affair/follow someone

"Vanity-bag"

(noun) a purse or case where a woman keeps her makeup

"Common tart"

(noun) an unremarkable or ordinary woman, often used in a demeaning manner

"Pudding face"

(adjective) ugly, having a very sloppy face

Flunkey

(noun) a servant or maid, often poor and uncultured

Ex-doxy

(noun) former mistress, doxy means whore or prostitute

"Ash and Snodland"

(noun) a town in England within the county of Kent

"Hellish half-light"

(term) the stage light or spotlight which shines on the characters during the performance

Taboo

(adjective) forbidden or outlawed

Dinghy

(noun) a small boat, often used for recreational boating

Shade

(noun) a ghost or nearly forgotten thought

"We were not long together"

(phrase) not having been together a long time
