Death row for killing an abusive husband
The great irony highlighted by the play is the fact that someone who kills their abuser can (and often does) go to jail and/or be sentenced to death row. As the play shows, the only way for Loureen to be truly free in her life is for Samuel to be gone; and yet, if the police found out, she would lose all her freedoms and possibly her life.
The police as a failed source of protection
For Loureen, the police are not a source of protection. When she was unsafe, they didn't come—Florence is the person who protected her from Samuel. Ironically, if Loureen were to go to them now in the wake of Samuel's death, they might put Loureen in jail.
