Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics Irony

The irony of stuttering

No one knew that Biden could become a public figure and excel in public speaking. While in lower grades and in high school, Biden was exempted from public speaking because he was a stammerer. Biden says, “My freshman year of high school, I got an exemption from public speaking.” Ironically, Biden went against the odds when he joined politics and became a senator with the best public speeches never heard before. Biden's ability to defeat his weakness is a motivation and encouragement for people struggling with various life conditions.

The irony of Hell

After the challenges Biden went through in his school, he came to learn that they provided him with opportunities to be who he is today. There is an incidence when teachers ordered Biden to remain back and take responsibility for his actions. Biden writes, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Biden's statement is satirical because, through challenges, he built his political career and attained his life goals.

The Irony of Biden’s Father

Fathers are naturally known to be disciplinarians, and they execute their mandate by using canes as the best way of instilling discipline in their children. Ironically, Biden says that his father never raised his hand on neither of the children because he said that there is no insane man who can raise his hand over a young child. Biden writes, “He never laid a hand on any of us because he said that there is no man has a right to raise a hand to a woman or child.”

The irony of the nun teacher

Biden describes nuns as very important religious people in his life because they taught him a culture of good virtues and doing good to others. Additionally, Biden indicates that nuns were among the people who encouraged him to continue practicing his speech to avoid being a stammerer. Ironically, of nun's mimics Biden's stuttering in class. When Biden failed to read a paragraph in class during an English session, the nun mimicked him by saying, 'Mr. Bu-Bu-Bu-Bu Biden.” Biden found this abusive and discouraging and decided to walk out of class and go home to report the nun to his mother.

The irony of Biden’s classmates

Biden was the mockery subject in his class because every student bulled him because he stuttered while speaking. However, Biden was a bright student, and he relied heavily on those who encouraged him to practice speaking fluently. Ironically, the same students who bullied Biden in class glorified him on the field of sports. Biden was a talented sportsperson, and everyone was fond of him. The reader finds it satirical that the same people who glorified Biden in the field bullied him in class.
