In 2050, Wormwood, an alien, forms an indestructible dome in the fictional town of Rosewater. The dome oozes an extraterrestrial fungus that causes some humans to gain psychic powers when they come into contact with it.
Kaaro is a teenager living in Rosewater. He survives by stealing, using the powers he gained from coming into contact with the fungus. Kaaro is later recruited by a government agency, who train him on perfecting his abilities. He is sent on his first mission to find an anarchist and runs into Woomword. During their meeting, Kaaro impedes an assassination attempt on Wormwood.
In 2066, people who came into contact with the fungus begin to die out. Kaaro discovers that the alien's goal was to collect information on the human species. The creation of these powered individuals was an unprecedented result of alien presence on Earth. Now that their mission was complete, they began killing off all the psychic powered humans. Woomword is against this directive and saves Kaaro from being murdered. It is also discovered that the aliens have been altering human DNA, which will lead to the eventual extinction of the human race.
