How do you think the narrator knows Salvatore? What evidence is there in the text to support this?
The narrator states that they first met Salvatore when he was a young boy of fifteen, but there is no interaction between the narrator and Salvatore depicted in the story and their relationship is left undefined. Students should debate how the narrator and Salvatore might know each other. Much of the story seems to be a character sketch of a boy observed at a distance; perhaps the narrator is a vacationer who visits the islands regularly and watches Salvatore grow up, or another fisherman on the island.
