Satellites Background

Satellites Background

Satellites is a play by critically acclaimed playwright Diana Son. Commissioned by the Public Theater, it was presented in the 2004 “New Work Now!” which recognized works from emerging or established playwrights. The play opened on June 18, 2006. The play, set in Brooklyn, is about Nina (Sandra Oh) and Miles (Kevin Carroll), an interracial couple who just became new parents and moved into a gentrifying neighborhood. Their instincts are tested repeatedly, and they are unsure who to trust in this new and ever-changing environment. It’s a hilarious look into interracial families, parenting, and priorities. Satellites is more of a reunion play for Diana Son, Kevin Carroll, and Sandra Oh, having previously worked on Diana Son’s highly acclaimed “Stop Kiss” play which was showcased in 1998.

The play was directed by Michael Greif and additional actors included Johanna Day, Satya Lee, Ron Cephas Jones, and Clarke Thorell. The creative crew consisted of Mark Wendland (Scene), Miranda Hoffman (Costume), Walter Trarbach (Sound), Kenneth Posner (Lighting), and Michael Friedman (Score). The play was praised for Mark Wendland’s scene designs which had movable sets which many commented on as a metaphor for the juggles of urban life and the constant shift and change in the environment. Michael Greif’s directing was lacking in many ways. Many people stated that it did not add anything to the story.
