Jean McConville

Jean is the protagonist of the book, and she is a mother of ten surviving children. The author describes her as a fertile woman because at the age of 38, she already has given birth to 14 children, but unfortunately, four died. Jean lives when the Irish authorities are kicking out the British Army. Irish Republican Army (IRA) is tasked with the responsibility of kidnapping and executing the British informers. Jean is suspected of liaising with the British, and she is brutally kidnapped and killed by the IRA. Her children never see her again until after thirty years when they discover her remains.

Arthur

Arthur is Jean McConville's husband, but unfortunately, he dies, leaving her to raise ten children single-handedly. He leaves behind a jobless wife with the most solemn responsibility.

Anne

Anne is the eldest child of Jean McConville, and she is 20 years old.

Bill

The son of Jean and he is six years old. Bill is a twin brother to Jim.

Jim

He is the son of Jean, and he is six years old. He is the twin brother of Bill.

Helen

Helen is Jean's daughter, and she is fifteen years old. When they move to the new apartment after their father's death, her mother sends her to the local restaurant to buy fish and chips.

Michael

Jean McConville's sone aged eleven. Michael tries to defend her mother from the kidnappers, but in vain because he is still a child, and his energy could not match that of twelve grown-up men who are pulling and dragging his mother.

Archie

Jean's eldest son, who as the eldest son available at home during her mother's kidnapping incident. He asks the kidnappers if he can accompany them to know where they are taking their mother, to which they agree. The rest of the children are squeezed into one room.

Gerry Adams

He is the man who ordered the kidnapping and killing of Jean McConville. He is having a superior position in the IRA. His role is monitoring those suspected to be going against the government and ensuring that they are eliminated from society.

Hughes

He is a close friend of Gerry Adams. He implicates Adams for the brutal kidnapping and murder of Jean. However, Gerry Adams is released without being accused of any charges since he is part of the IRA agency.
