Sexual Perversity in Chicago Summary

Sexual Perversity in Chicago Summary

In today's climate, Danny and Bernie would be summoned to the office of the Human Resources Manager and given a serious warning about their office banter; it is overtly sexual and creates a workplace atmosphere that makes it pretty difficult for a woman to work alongside the two buddies and still feel relaxed or comfortable. Bernie and Danny mean no harm; they find their jobs boring and try to keep themselves occupied with sexual banter, which seems to revolve around what they like a woman to do to them in bed, and memories of women who have pleased them in just such a fashion.

Joan and Deborah, two best friends and room-mates, have similar conversations, although not in the workplace; their sexually-driven conversations take place in the apartment, on the sofa, and usually after a glass or two of wine. The tone of their conversations is different too; they focus on the shortcomings of the men they have encountered and bemoan the fact that they can never ever find a man who will take them on a decent date.

When Danny and Deborah meet, there is instant attraction, primarily sexual, but there is also a personality chemistry as well. Their budding romance then becomes the subject of both Danny and Bernie's workplace banter, and Joan and Deborah's long conversations about what exactly is wrong with the modern relationship. Things seem to be getting serious, despite the trivialized nature of the conversations inspired by the couple; Deborah moves into Danny's apartment, but this seems to create a problem in that they can't seem to talk seriously to each other. Their relationship is based on sex and the happenings of everyday life, nothing deeper. Their fights increase in number and hostility and eventually they break up.

Danny once again becomes Bernie's workplace straight-man, and their sexually explicit banter re-starts. The women realize that the older they get, the less they know, and that they do not understand the complexities of relationships at all.
