She's the Man

She's the Man Imagery

Viola as Sebastian

Despite the fact that Viola looks pretty ridiculous posing as her brother, Hollywood magic is such that she is able to make everyone believe that she is, in fact, a guy. A short haircut, sideburns, a man's gait, and a ridiculous voice all help Viola keep up the charade. One of the most memorable images from the film becomes the image of Viola in teenage boy drag, trying her best to blend in, against all odds.

Soccer Montages

Soccer is Viola's number one passion, and throughout the film we see numerous montages of her kicking the ball around a field. Often, energetic music plays as we see her play, first over the opening credits, and then in a montage in which Duke is teaching her to play better. The soccer field is the place where Viola can come alive, and the way that these montages are shot and edited makes the viewer feel how exciting and liberating playing soccer feels for Viola.

Debutante Ball

At the end of the film, when it seems like Duke isn't going to show up and forgive Viola, he does, and he escorts her down the center aisle at the ball. They kiss before they walk down the aisle, and they make the perfect couple. The image shows the innocent romance that has developed between them.

Tampon up the nose

When Viola arrives in the room, a tampon falls out of her boot, a sure giveaway that she is not actually a boy. Duke, Toby, and Andrew all take note, but she resourcefully makes the excuse that they are good for absorbing nosebleeds. She sticks it up her nose to prove it, a ridiculous image that the boys make fun of.
