Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Background

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a novel by American writer Lisa See. The book was published in 2005, and has about 250 pages. The book has to deal with China during the nineteenth centuries, when it was highly decentralized and refusing to adapt to western traditions. In this era, footbinding was still a common practice - women would have their feet tied up because it was appealing to men.

Lisa See is an American writer with American and Chinese ancestry. Many of her works, both fictional and non-fictional, deal with Chinese culture and tradition, like this one. Although she was born in Paris, See spent most of her childhood days in Los Angeles. Her first book, a memoir published in 1995, was titled On Gold Mountain. It was very successful, and gave a detailed description of her life living in a Chinese-American family as a child.
