What is the symbolism in Spartacus being slashed with red paint while Varinia looks on?
Varinia and Spartacus fall in love as the film progresses, but in this scene as Spartacus is being taught the "kill zone" during his fights we see Varinia looking on at him. The paint crosses Spartacus' body and it is a symbol that she has slain him with love. The red represents his passion for her and his willingness to die for her which he does.

Why does Spartacus kill Antoninus?
During the final part of the picture Antoninus and Spartacus are demanded to square off in a to the death battle for Crassus. The winner will be crucified. Thus Spartacus kills the young man so that he will not have to suffer the excruciatingly pain and agony of dying on a cross. Instead Spartacus ends his life quickly in order to give him rest. A final act of leadership for the great warrior.

How does Draba have an effect upon Spartacus?
Spartacus meets Draba early in training and Draba wants nothing to do with him. Draba then goes on to tell Spartacus that he will die before killing another slave. Thus when he must square off with Spartacus in a dual for Crassus he keeps his commitment. When he has the chance to kill Spartacus he instead turns his trident to the Roman aristocrats in an attempt to kill them. But his act of defiance sparks the revolt that leads to the men being set free.
