Standing Again at Sinai is a scholarly account of feminism and Judaism. It was written by Judith Plaskow and was published on February 1, 1991. Plaskow is an American author, feminist and Jewish woman. She is a Professor of Religious Studies at Manhattan College. She was also a President of the American Academy of Religion.
Plaskow, in essence, talks about the discrimination women face and its relation to Judaism. She speaks about the roles of women and how it is increasing in society. Moreover, Plaskow considers how Judaism affects the Jewish women's lives. She describes how the Torah is, in her view, male-centered. Plaskow advocates for women's rights in religion, relationships, and normal life. She questions many aspects of Torah in the point of view of a feminist. She says that what mainly inspired her to write Standing Again at Sinai is the most of the time when she went to a place of worship with her husband, she stayed out.
Some critics say that Plaskow wanted to re-write the Torah so that it includes more women's rights. The book earned a 4 out of a 5-star rating on Goodreads. Most readers greatly enjoyed the book. One reader wrote on Goodreads: "There is something wonderful about a clear, beautifully reasoned argument. Plaskow explores how women have been excluded or marginalized in Jewish law". Basically, this book is for religious people, specifically Jewish feminists, who want to understand more about women in Judaism.
