Star Wars Quotes and Analysis

"These aren't the droids we're looking for."

Stormtrooper

Obi-Wan Kenobi uses his Jedi mindtricks on a stormtrooper in Mos Eisley in order to divert the Imperial forces and safely navigate the rough spaceport town without fear of interference. The stormtrooper says this line—a repetition of something Obi-Wan has said—as if under a spell.

"I don't know, I can imagine quite a bit."

Han Solo

Luke is trying to convince Han Solo to help save Princess Leia and suggests that he could make a lot of money if he helps save the princess. Always the smartass, Solo responds with this one-liner, suggesting that he could imagine a lot of reward money, so the mission had better be worth it.

"Wonderful girl. Either I'm going to kill her or I'm beginning to like her."

Han Solo

Han Solo says this about Princess Leia. This quote speaks directly to the dual nature of his and Leia's relationship. They want to strangle each other one moment, but they are also drawn to each other. In the midst of all the chaos of escaping from the Death Star, Solo manages to strike up a strange and contentious chemistry with the princess.

"Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"

Princess Leia

When Luke enters her cell on the Death Star, he is wearing a stormtrooper's uniform. Princess Leia is lounging on her side and seems barely fazed by his entrance, delivering this wry and skeptical line about Luke's relative shortness compared to the average stormtrooper.

“Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”

Princess Leia

This is what Princess Leia is saying in the holographic message that Luke finds on R2-D2 while cleaning him. She is desperately looking for help from an old Jedi who she knows can help the rebellion.

“She may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts, kid.”

Han Solo

When Luke insults Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon, for looking like a piece of "junk," Solo is understandably defensive, and tells him that it's a powerful ship, even if it's not the most aesthetically sleek or impressive.

“I felt a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan has a strange feeling after Alderaan is destroyed by the Death Star. With the power of the Force, he can feel the apocalyptic catastrophe in his body, and he fears for the worst.

“When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master.”

Darth Vader

As they draw their lightsabers to fight, Vader boasts to his former mentor, Obi-Wan, that he is a master. In this moment, Vader proves that he is not only evil, but arrogant.

"Use the Force, Luke."

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan says this to Luke from the afterlife. As Luke flies into the Death Star to deliver the definitive shot and destroy it, he can hear Obi-Wan encouraging him to keep going and to harness the power of the Force to help him.

"Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls my destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense."

Han Solo

Han Solo says this to Luke when Luke asks him if he believes in the Force. Ever the earthy pragmatist, Solo has a skepticism about the metaphysical nature of "the Force" and makes this very clear to Luke.
