Storyteller Background

Storyteller is a unique book in that it is not a straight novel or a collection of the same kind of 'shorts'. Instead, this book written by Leslie Marmon Silko and published in 1981 by Arcade Publishing is a collection of poems, short stories, and photographs that follow the plot of a Native American storyline. Four years earlier, Silko published Ceremony, another book based on the traditions and ways passed down through generations of the Native American people. This book was not as big of a success, but still captures the essence of what the author is trying to portray - how vital thoughts and beliefs were to Native American cultures and how stories were generally interesting facts.

Leslie Marmon Silko was born in 1948 and has Native American, Mexican, and English roots. She co-wrote Storyteller with Laguna Pueblo, who was also from Native American roots (relating to the Pueblo tribe). All of Silko's works have worked toward the Native American Renaissance, a movement that she feels is important for others to recognize, especially considering that Native American tradition is quickly dwindling. Today, she lives in Tuscon, Arizona, not too far from her hometown in New Mexico.
